What are some of the regulations I need to consider when starting a business in Ontario?

  • Business Name Registration

If the name of the business is different from your own name, it must be registered with the Ministry of Consumer and Business Services, before you start using it. To register your sole proprietorship or partnership online, go to Ontario Business Connects www.cbs.gov.on.ca/obc

Ontario Business Connects workstations are available at the following Enterprise Toronto locations:
    Toronto: 100 Queen St West
    North York: 5100 Yonge St
    Scarborough: 150 Borough Drive
    Etobicoke: 399 The West Mall

  • Provincial Sales Tax - Vendor's Permit

Ontario law requires businesses to collect and remit Provincial Sales Taxes on most retail goods and some services. A Vendor's Permit is required to do this. To apply online, go to Ontario Business Connects www.cbs.gov.on.ca/obc

  • Goods and Services Tax (GST)

Most businesses are required to collect and remit this federal tax. Businesses with annual sales of less than $30,000 can choose not to participate. For more information, see the Guide for Canadian Small Businesses at www.ccra-adrc.gc.ca

  • The Business Number

The Business Number (BN) is the number required to deal with the Federal Government and includes Revenue Canada's four major business accounts - Corporate Income Tax, Import/Export, Payroll Deductions, and GST. For more information, go to www.ccra-adrc.gc.ca
